Hey Scott, Steeldrifter,or anyone else for that matter who frequents those hallowed waters of the north... wanted to know what your thoughts are on a couple of things.
I have enough experience on the PM to at least know where to go, but am not very organized. I have some flies tied, (only about 4 dozen though) and finally have enough equipment to actually have a third backup rod. I know where to go to get to some holes, but am sadly a bit ignorant when it comes to the flies only area. My questions for those who would be kind enough to answer, are;
1. what would be your 4 or 5 go-to flies for the PM this time of year. I have an assortment of eggs, stoneflies in black and brown size 8-10-12, PM caddis, and some green and orange butt skunks. what am I missing that I don't want to go to the river without.
2. Setup; what is your best setup? I tend to only catch fish when
I'm chuck-n-duckin'. I do a basic floating line with a 18" section of 15# test, followed by 36" of 12#, and about 4 ft of 10#. I put a sliding weight on the 15# test section, and I sometimes fish with a trailer rig...that is a stonefly up front with an egg imitator tied to the back of the first hook at the bend. I don't use an indicator on my ine as I feel this is unnecessary...like having a bell go off to let you know a freight train is hitting you... Is this rig too lightfor salmon, or does anybody go lighter??
How do you sight fish for salmon on the reds, or fish that are behind the redds feeding? Streamers? Nymphs? Eggs? Doo you use weights or just free float them since the water is only a few feet deep...
Anybody use a spey rod on the PM? I have used it for chuck and duck and felt it was really easy, much easier than doing this type of fishing with my 9 ft rod. Is it possible to use roll casts with nymphs and eggs, or should i stick with spey patterns for the spey rod??
Best place to stay?? No brainer, I got a single room at BBT motel 50$! Best money I've spent! I will probably go in and spend some $ on fishing stuff at BBT;
OK that's a lot of questions. Any tips or suggestions from you river pimps would be a help!

My 5 go to flies are...n no particular order:
1. orange or pink crystal egg
2. Silver bullet (how to here)
3. A PM Wiggler photo here
4. Dustys Fuzz Buster photo here
5. Various eggs in sizes and colors...mostly pinks and oranges

My rig...I use a 8wt rod with a Solitude IV Reel...I typically C&D...I use amnesia (which needs a good stretch, maybe 50-70 feel or so off the spool before I hit the water). I think most who hate amnesia don't stretch it. I then tied from my amnesia to a 12"-18" section of 12lb where I thread on a plastic bead one above the sliding clasp that holds my let weight and one at the bottom. I then tie on anywhere from 6/8/10/12 lb depending on water conditions and light. The tippet length is usually 2'.

I always attempt to fish for the males b/c if you hook the female, it tends to ruin the run for awhile if you hook her or spook her. I dont Spey, but Dallas does and it's quite an art...

You number of flies..I usually tie up enough to lose all of them...and then tie up half of the number again! Lots of flies...lots of flies...I'd tie up a few dozen more...nothing like running out of a pattern they like...plus you can always use them down the road. I typically don't fish a tandem rig, but Smiley, a member I fish with does this often and seems to have a good number of hookups...

Thanks for the feedback Scott! I was checking out the flies you earmarked for me on the gallery and came across my black Stonefly from last fall (#37)...that was a surprise!! The weird thing is that my number has always been #37 ( ever since I saw "Cool Hand Luke"...)
I'm a little better at making those now, but can understand why they're always about .50 cents more than other flies. I now use black wire, or dubbing for the thorax, and goose biots for the tail. Yeah, much cleaner. NOt that the salmon are that discriminating!!
The Dusty's Fuzzbuster I learned from the Bear Andrews vhs tape I bought several years ago...a great looking fly and well worth the extra effort. I'm just always doing flies in the 11th hour before a trip and never have the right hooks...lucky I happen to have some Daichi 1730's, so I can whip a few up tonight...heh.
I tried doing a "double egg last night while watching tv and think I got it down...was trying to find a good "porn" name for it and enter it in the contest. ( I want one of those custom rods one day drifter...they're muy frio!!) I will post when I get back from my trip. Any other suggestions from the peanut gallery would be appreciated!! Thanks,

1- Eggs are good...but dont worry about eggs for at least 8-10 more days. The true "biters" right now are not looking for eggs just yet, in 10 days they may be, but not yet (although the trout are!).

But flies for now-

Black leech/bugger
White leech/bugger
Olive leech/bugger
Purple leech/bugger
Orange leech/bugger

(notice a trend?)

2- I do all C&D, Indi and spey for slamon...C&D is by far the most productive because it gets deeper in the holes.

3- No Redd fishing here. Too much like cheating...anyone can line a fish of a redd ...I fish the holes. Dark deep and cant see them. But know when they hit

4- Motel BBT or Outdoor Inn...cleanest places in town and dont cost all that much
