I gotz a new toy! 3 Months, 1 Week ago Karma: 0
We;ll guys and gals, I found a pontoon and hopefully if things go right I will be picking it up on Saturday. It's a used "Skeeter" I bought from a guy on another website (Shoe). So I am looking forward to getting up to the PM one more time this October. Wanted to know if you guys float for Steelies in November or is it too cold? Anyhow I feel pretty good about the deal and am looking forward to any suggestions from you seasoned floaters out there who may have some helpful suggestions on care and feeding of a pontoon, etc. I already read Steve's post on flytalk which gave good advise about different pressures in the bladders during the day, and the need to adjust.
I will try to post the pic later. It has a big "Orvis" tattoo'ed on it, so I was thinking about adding an "i" and calling it the "orifis" (I know, it's a reach...) and of course I will need to get another bumper sticker to put on it. ( please please please PK??)
Glad you guys had such a good time up at Barothy's this weekend. That is another nice brownie...and are those some steelies (looks like white mouths...) I hope that getting up there and doing a float will really open up some water for me and looking forward to maybe doing one of those group runs in the future so I can get some pointers.
(: Bill

Congrats on the purchase! We did have a great time on the PM last weekend. The guy who caught the brown had not made it up to fish for Salmon so he def. busted his cherry on Salmon and on that monster brown. We all did pretty well but hanging with the gang for the weekend was the hi-lite.

OK back to your boat...we had like 6 of these things in our group along with a driftboat. I will give you the first advise Dallas gave me...drift it, don't row it...Small corrections go a long way. Decal...no problem, just send me your Addy again. I like the Orifis idea too! The thing with the decals is that you really need to keep the pontoon inflated or the decal will buckle. The 'orvis' is probably screened on, so it won't hurt it to be deflated.

Always take a pump with you on the river. It can be floated all 4 seasons, but you might need to adjust air pressure throughout the day as the temps change.

You will find some great water that is not accessible by foot and heck, the worst day of fishing is still a pretty damn good day on a boat.

I need to get the kiddos to school but will post you a pic of how I store mine...do you have a garage?

Yup, I do have a garage...was thinking about a pully rig and just cranking it up and hanging it off the ceiling. I have never done it before though soposting a pic would go a long way toward showing me how...
As for getting the feel for the thing, I live about 2 minutes away from Grand River and would be a perfect chance to check it out on more familiar waters before hoofin' that thing up to the PM and pissin' folks off right in the middle of the salmon run. (especially with that big "orvis" label on it I would be lucky to not get shot!!)
I wonder if a "v" can get turned into an "f"...
PS:
note to Steve; still saving for that 7 weight, but had to jump on this as it is a good deal (under 2 c notes...) and therefore (at least in theory) worth popping for up front! this gives me a couple months to ref some soccer games to pay for the rod!

Before you go out and try to 'engineer' a pulley system, I have a very cheap and effective solution..I need to dig the photo up...I'll do it today. In regards to floating the busy time of the year...remember kindness pays in spades! We floated through probably 60-70 anglers around green on Friday, I was in a drift boat and we had probably 4 other pontoons. When you approach them, ask them where they'd like you to drift (behind them, in front of them) and just be nice. You start pissing people off when you come up on them and just go right over them. I will say sometimes anglers are tucked back in the weeds or brush and you don't see them...just be nice. Out of all the people we passed on Sat. We didn't have a fowl or crossed word thrown at us. Even the guys who weren't doing hot were nice.

I'll dig up my storage photo...

Disregard my 'limp' pontoons - it was cold out Happens to the best of us right?!
Storage photo...I bought this at Lowes (I am sure Home depot or something would have it too-pulley hardware is circled in red). Works great. I had bought 2 sets of pulleys for the family bikes and after getting my boat and trying to figure out storage for it, I tried it and it worked...I can drop it out of the sky in a few minutes and throw it in the back of my truck fully assembled and head out. The weight of the boat (mine is around 80lbs) is more than the rating for the pulley so I CLAIM NO RESPONSIBILITY on this technique for storage. Just saying it works for me! There that's my legal disclaimer. Use at your own risk. The nice thing is the pulley was $25 bucks...cheap. MAKE SURE you lock into studs in the ceiling...did I mention MAKE SURE you hit studs in the ceiling.

Here is a link to it at amazon.com

Nice 'toon! Looks like you've got a nice storage shelf on the back...measure it and go buy a plastic storage Tote with a lid...I do that and can fit a ton of fishing gear, rain gear, and whatever else it in...if you got adventurous you could probably fit a tent on the back and have a few nice days on the river...use a bungee cord or something to hold the Tote in place.
