To those who walk-in and don't have one, they hate them, to most drift boat owners, they dispise them, for those of us lucky enough to pick one up WE LOVE THEM...I am talking about the fishingporn PornToon boat. Yep.. You've seen them on the river, those little inflatable double pontoon scooters. They are lightweight, easy to handle, and can snake around most anglers and float in much shallower water than many drift boats. Now I have been on countless trips down rivers with Dallas in his beautifully crafted fishingporn.com Mothership, and the mothership is a great ride, gets lots of looks and lots of "did you build that beauty?" "what kind?" etc...etc...
My whole interest in my PornToon (also know as the TU Colorado) was when Str8up had met us a the Midwest Fly Show a few years ago. He said he was going to pick 2 of them up at the bargain price of $280. Dallas and I ended up borrowing them to hit some Western waters of Michigan. After the first 5 minutes (the first minutes found me running into a guide boat) I was done...ready to pack the whole thing up to the put-in and walk in somewhere else WITHOUT that death sled. Dallas, the seasoned drifter, pulled us aside, we got the rods out, shook off the cobwebs on our casts and explained the way to navigate with the pontoons..."it's like a drift boat, not a row boat...STOP ROWING IT". After that, all was well. The float was awesome. I had almost as much fun drifting as I did fishing. We hit holes and runs and were able to stop and turn on a dime. Dallas strapping it in... I'll warn you, you'll probably not be able to find these boats for the price we got them for. We purchased them a few years back before they really got really popular. I've seen them for as much as $500 for the exact same model. Yes, there are better models out there. For my budget, the $280 was a deal. The oars break down into 3 pieces for easy storage and travel. The pontoons are easily put together. After you put it together once, you can probably tear it down in 15 minutes and put it together in the same. The entire boat is held together with clevis pins so no tools are required (other than a wrench to initially install the basket to the frame).
The valve system on my version has been upgraded with the newer models. This is a plus, so I won't go into that since my version is not available.
The frame that spans between the 2 pontoons is well constructed and the seat is comfortable for a full day float. The basket in the back is large enough to hold a medium sized plastic Tote. You'll need to go to your local store and find the Tote that fits. I highly recommend the Tote box as it has a lid and keeps everything dry when the sky opens up. The rack also has a motor mount for a small motor although I've never tried it out. The frame also is rigged for a simple anchor system using a few pullies.
Break time...notice the reels fit nicely into the front pouch. For those lake launchers or big water drifters, it comes with a rod holder. I wouldn't recommend it on a small river float as your rod will be hitting branches all day long (the rod holder holds the rod at a approx. a 45˚ angle).
Each pontoon has 3 storage pouches (6 total). The main center pouch can easily hold several bottles of water and some snacks or a sandwich. Bottles of water can be switched for your favorite beverage. It has a molded can holder too.
The oarlocks can be placed in 3 different positions. The seat is also adjustable. The leg extensions are also adjustable to various lengths.
