My introduction to Nor-Vice was at the Midwest Fly Fishing Expo at the Nor-Vise booth. I was mesmerized by the speed and accuracy of what Norm was doing. Norm went through the different ways to use the vise and how it made life easy. I was hooked. I spent the next half hour with him as he did the demonstration. I left the booth without the vise. I kept coming back and watching for the magic show to stop and to see if my excitement had dwindled. Nope.
I came across it again at a fly tying seminar at a local shop. Again the magic of this vice blew me away. I had a rotating vise but it seemed to be a Model T compared to a Mustang. After talking to the production fly tier and the owner of the shop I bought in. Sold. The Vise has made my tying so much more enjoyable. It was the speed that got me. Speed kills! I could whip out two dozen flies for a trip in little over an hour. If I started a week in advance with an hour or two I could have all my fly boxes filled. The Nor-Vise concept is to position the hook shank on the centerline of rotation and then turn the hook rather than wrap hand over hand around the hook. A thread post, aligned with the center of rotation, permits material to be "turned" or "spun" onto the hook without the tying thread being wrapped on at the same time. The Nor-Vise system will accommodate a variety of jaw designs that can be quickly and easily mounted onto the vise arbor. Although all four of the different jaw designs will handle nearly any fly-tying situation, from very tiny and delicate trout flies to large saltwater patterns, these different designs each excel in certain applications.
The Nor-Vise includes a matching Thread Post, Mounting Bolts, Operating and Set-up Recommendations, and a professionally produced instructional Video. Note: If you have an older version of the Nor-Vise with an integral Front Hub/ Arbor it is still possible to change from one design to another. Your “Conversion” can be ordered with a new arbor. To change; remove the black “O” ring, and the Rear Hub will slide off, next remove the exposed drive disc, now the Arbor and Front Hub assembly will slide out of the ball bearings and can be replaced with your new arbor and Conversion. You can also send in your vise when ordering a new Conversion and have it updated by adding the Friction Clamp and the more convenient changing system.
Now with all that said about the vice, I don’t think you can purchase it without The Automatic Bobbin. IT makes all rotary vice more effiant. With the speed of both you can tie so much faster. The bobbin works like a tape measure that self rewinds. The old method of turning the bobbin back up the thread to help manage the perciece location of where you are putting the thread is gone. The spring/clutch will allow you to bring the bobbin back up the thread with ease. Norm sells extra spools for the bobbin, they are a must have. I think I have 12 now. Need more. Mmmm. kitThe Automatic Bobbin is the perfect thread management tool. Whether you are using a Nor-vise or any other fly tying vise, the Automatic bobbin will improve, simplify and speed up your fly tying. The Automatic Bobbin solves the problem of getting the bobbin out of the way, yet instantly having it come right back to where it’s needed. - The Norlander Automatic Bobbin is a very innovative, patented design. A stainless steel spring/clutch mechanism is housed in a precision-machined aluminum hub.
- Interchangeable machined aluminum spools press onto this hub, held in place by friction from an "O" ring. These spools will hold from 50 to 500 yards of your favorite fly tying thread.
- Thread can be transferred onto the aluminum spools with an electric drill or with the Nor-Vise itself and a spooling arbor.
- Thread is guided to the perfect tying point through a fine ceramic tube.
- Thread tension is controlled simply by squeezing the bobbin spool when tying; each turn of thread will then be exactly as tight or as light as needed.
- This unique bobbin can also be used with other vises too!
I still use my other vise for certain applications like tying the Polish Woven Nymph and other flies. The magic of using this vice is the centerline rotation and the speed you can turn the hook. The Nor-vise can also make dubbing brushes and re-enforce herl bodies in a flash. If you need some more information go to the site and I have seen some videos on YouTube.
